THE STORY

Kaffivagninn is the oldest operating restaurant in Iceland.

Kaffivagninn was founded in 1935 by Bjarni Kristjánsson. At that time, it was located at the corner of Pósthússtræti and Tryggvagata but was later moved.

Originally Kaffivagninn was placed on the back of a truck parked at Ellingsenplanið. For that reason it was named Kaffivagninn, which translates to “The Coffee Wagon“ in English.

Today‘s Kaffivagninn still holds history close to it‘s heart and is located on the harbor in downtown, Reykjavík. Kaffivagninn offers breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee drinks, cakes, and pastries.

    I waited 2.5 years to have these fish and chips again, and I was not disappointed. Kaffivagninn has the best fish and chips and the planet. We were on our way back from Scotland, where the fish and chips are barely edible compared to Kaffivagninn

    There is healthy mix of local people and tourists there, and most tables are taken all the time - two good signs. The fish of a day we've tried was salmon, and even we eat this fish quite often it was completely new experience

    We found this restaurant by chance one lunch time, sat on the decking overlooking the harbour and found it to be one of the best restaurants in Reykjavik serving good wholesome food, all the fish dishes looked awesome, simple tasty food cooked to perfection and reasonably priced.
